National Women's Soccer League: semi-final play-offs, full previews, teams and prospects
The regular season has finished and we now know the line-up for the hotly-anticipated National Women's Soccer League Play-Off semi-finals to be played on October 20.
They are as follows:
North Carolina Courage v Reign FC
Chicago Red Stars v Portland Thorns FC
Ahead of the two mouthwatering clashes, let's take a look at each match and assess who has the best chance of making it through to the final on October 27.
North Carolina Courage v Reign FC
North Carolina Courage are heading into the semis for the fourth consecutive time (third time since changing their name from Western New York Flash) having finished top of the NWSL in the regular season.
Last year, Paul Riley's side brushed past Chicago 2-0 and then dominated Portland to win the final 3-0.
In 2017, they were beaten by Portland 1-0 in the final, so you feel the 2019 season could well be set up for the two to meet in a deciding third game.
Standing in their way are Reign FC, who have not appeared in the Championship final since being beaten twice in succession by FC Kansas City in 2014 and 2015.
It is the case that the Washington-based outfit handed North Carolina their second defeat of the season when they beat them 2-1 back in May.
But since then they have been beaten twice by their semi-final opponents and finished 11 points adrift of them in the league.
Furthermore, North Carolina lost just one of their final eight NWSL matches of the season, while Reign managed to win only three from nine.
Form, league position and recent head-to-head games tell you this is North Carolina's to lose as they go in search of an historic fourth final in a row.
Chicago Red Stars v Portland Thorns FC
You have to go back five years to find a season where the Chicago Red Stars failed to make the Play-Offs.
However, their supporters remain deprived of a Championship final appearance having been beaten in the semis in each of the last four seasons.
They finished runners-up in the regular season and now face third-placed Portland Thorns, who have reached the final in each of the last two campaigns.
There have been a total of 14 goals in the three matches between Chicago and Portland this season, so expect excitement as Rory Dames pits his wits against Mark Parsons.
In fact, both Washington Spirit and the Utah Royals had better defensive records than these two sides despite not making the Play-Offs.
It is their leaky back lines which make this game an entertaining prospect, but also make you worry for the victor if they are to face North Carolina in the final - a side who scored 13 goals more than anyone else in the regular season.
You have to give Portland the edge heading into this one because they have beaten Chicago 3-0 on two separate occasions since June, and they also crucially have recent experience of getting to Championships finals.
