India to stage shooting and archery events at 2022 Commonwealth Games

India will host the shooting and archery events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, six months before all the other sports get underway in Birmingham.

Both disciplines will take place in Chandigarh in January, while the rest of the Games will take place between July 27 and August 7.

India are responsible for the initial proposal to stage the two sports in their country after they threatened to refuse to compete at the Games when it was revealed shooting could be banned.

The move has since been approved by the Commonwealth Games Federation Executive Board.

"There is a long tradition of Commonwealth Championships being held across the globe, featuring several different sports, so it's great news that India will be continuing this tradition," said Birmingham 2022 chief executive Ian Reid.

CGF president Dame Louise Martin added: "Commonwealth archery and shooting athletes now have an unprecedented opportunity to compete in an elite event that will showcase the very best of Commonwealth Sport and add value to the Commonwealth Sports Movement."

Medals from the shooting and archery events will contribute to the overall medal table in the summer of 2022.

India won 16 medals in shooting at the 2018 Games and finish third in the medal table with a total medal count of 66.
