Double Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones suffers knee ligament injury months before Tokyo 2020
Double Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones has torn a ligament in her knee in her preparations for Tokyo 2020.
The British taekwondo star announced the news on social media that she had torn her MCL during a competition in Sweden last week.
Jones, 26, is looking to make history in her sport by becoming the first man or woman to win gold medals at three separate Olympic Games in taekwondo.
And despite the setback ahead of Japan in the summer, the Welsh athlete remains upbeat and adamant she will make a speedy recovery.
Speaking on Instagram, she said: "So i tore my MCL in a competition in Sweden last week which forced me to pull out of the final. There is no good time to get injured but luckily it’s only a minor setback (grade 2 tear).
"With the help of a great team I’ll be kicking in a few weeks and back stronger than ever ahead of the summer! The rehab grind starts Monday."
Jones heads into the Tokyo Games off the back of winning her first world championships gold, which she claimed in May last year in the -57kg category.
