Former Bristol and Toulon flanker Joe El-Abd will replace Felix Jones as England defence coach.

The Rugby Football Union confirmed 44-year-old El-Abd’s appointment, taking over from Jones, who tendered his resignation in August.

El-Abd will join for the autumn Tests and Six Nations this season, combining his role as rugby director at Oyonnax, before departing the French second division club next year and going full-time with England.

The PA news agency understands that Jones will continue as an England assistant coach, providing remote support with an emphasis on tactical analysis and development during his notice period.

“I am delighted to bring in someone with Joe’s expertise to our coaching programme,” England head coach Steve Borthwick said.

“His knowledge, passion for the game and proven experience in developing high-performing teams will be key to the squad’s ongoing development.

“Joe embodies the qualities we value in the England Rugby team, and I am sure he will add to our environment and quickly deliver continued improvements to our game.”

I am excited by the direction in which this England team is headed and where they want to go under Steve’s leadership. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his vision for this team is clear.

El-Abd moved to Oyonnax initially as a player-coach, and he returned there as director of rugby in 2019 after four years as forwards and defence coach at French Top 14 club Castres.

“I feel incredibly honoured to join the England coaching team, and I can’t wait to get started,” El-Abd said.

“I am excited by the direction in which this England team is headed and where they want to go under Steve’s leadership. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his vision for this team is clear.

“Defence is a huge part of the game and it is something I am extremely passionate about. I am excited by the opportunity to keep developing a defence that will help drive England’s success.”

England kick off their autumn schedule against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium on November 2, before also hosting Australia, South Africa and Japan.
