The Canadian Grand Prix has become the ninth race of the Formula 1 season to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Race organisers, who were set to host the event at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on June 12-14, will now look to re-arrange for a date later in the year.

In addition to the fact that a decision needed to be made imminently to give staff enough time to set up the track, Canadian Grand Prix president Francois Dumontier also believes the focus right now needs to be on helping combat the virus.

He said: "I am proud to see how such wonderful initiatives and technical advancements stemming from Formula 1 are being applied in a time of crisis.

"At the moment it is crucial that all of our energies be put together to overcome COVID-19. We will welcome you with open arms at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as soon as it is safe to do so."

The first race on the calendar which has not yet been postponed is now the French Grand Prix, which is due to take place at the Circuit Paul Ricard near Marseille on June 26-28.
