Twitter marks Donald Trump’s tweet about ‘racist baby’ as ‘manipulated media’
Twitter has marked a video tweeted by Donald Trump about a ‘racist baby’ as ‘manipulated media’.
The US president shared an edited version of a CNN video featuring a black child running away from a white child, with a fake and misspelled headline that read: ‘Terrified todler runs from racist baby.’
The social media giant tagged the tweet as ‘manipulated media,’ and linked the tag to a web page outlining Twitter’s policies relating to edited clips on certain content.
The original video was of the two toddlers running towards each other and hugging which went viral on social media.
CNN published the video last year with the headline: ‘These two toddlers are showing us what real-life besties look like.'
The video then goes on to share the original clip and concludes: “America is not the problem. Fake news is.”
The policy statement on Twitter read: "On Thursday (18 June) the President shared a version of the video which many journalists confirmed was edited and doctored with a fake CNN chyron.
"You may not deceptively promote synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm.
“In addition, we may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context.”
It is not the first time Trump’s tweets have been marked after two of his tweets were fact-checked last month as he accused the platform for ‘stifling conservative voices’.
He has since signed an executive order targeting social media giants in a bid to control the online companies ’unchecked power’.
