Spurs boss Jose Mourinho digs out former club by suggesting Manchester United will be ‘lucky’ to finish in top four
Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has had a dig at his former club Manchester United by insisting they have been ‘lucky’ to challenge for the top four this season.
With two games remaining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sit in fifth place, seven points above Spurs and out of a Champions League place only by virtue of goal difference.
The Red Devils also face fourth-place Leicester on the final day so Champions League qualification remains in their own hands.
However, Mourinho, who managed the club between 2016 and 2018, feels they have been dealt a great deal of luck along with playing some impressive football.
He said: "If United do it, they’ll have done it by playing very well in the second part of the season.
"And on top of that everybody knows they were a bit lucky more than once. Luck that others didn’t have. Like us."
A number of people have drawn attention to the fact that United have been awarded more penalties this season than any other team in Premier League history.
Solskjaer’s men have also had more goals against them ruled out by VAR than any other team.
But they have unquestionably been scintillating to watch in the last few weeks and became the first team to win three successive Premier League games by a three goal margin earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Spurs sit in seventh place and can only hope for a best case scenario of Europa League football next season.
