Tennis legend Serena Williams confirms place at US Open, saying ‘I cannot wait to return to New York’
American tennis star Serena Williams has confirmed that she will compete at the behind-closed-doors US Open in August as she bids to claim a record 24th Grand Slam title.
The 38-year-old, who has won the title six times, revealed the news on Wednesday on an official US Open Zoom call.
“I cannot wait to return to New York and play the US Open,” said the 2019 runner-up.
"I feel like USTA is going to do an amazing job making sure everything is perfect and safe.
"I’ll certainly miss the crowd and hearing them cheer, but this is crazy, I’m excited," she finished.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the tournament was given the green light by New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
The 2020 US Open will start on august 31 at Flushing Meadows and will run until September 13 - finishing just a week before the rescheduled French Open.
