San Francisco Giants coach becomes first woman to coach on field during MLB game
A San Francisco Giants coach has made history by becoming the first female to coach on the field during a Major League Baseball game.
Alyssa Nakken, who is currently the only female MLB coach in league history, suprised fans on Tuesday when the Giants took on Oakland A's in an exhibition game, by entering the late innings of the game to coach first base.
The four-time Academic All American softball player for Sacramento State joined the Giants in 2014 as an intern, before becoming an assistant coach on Gabe Kapler's staff earlier this year.
Prior to her time with Giants, she played first base for the Sacramento State Hornets from 2009-2012 and was a three-time all-conference selection and four-time Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
Following the game, she received widespread praise from players, coaches and fans.
Giants star Mauricio Dubon said on Twitter: “Congrats @AlyssaNakken becoming the FIRST EVER! I’m honored to share the field with you.”
Team-mate Hunter Pence added: “Congratulations on making history!”
Giants manager Kapler said: “To see her get a lot of credit that she deserves for all the work she’s put in, and the development that has occurred for her the last six months, has been really encouraging.”
A’s manager Bob Melvin added: "I think it’s great. It’s history-making, and we all noticed it.
"I read (about her), and everything would suggest that she’s a heck of a coach. I was out there earlier watching their workouts, and she’s really involved and looks like she gets the respect of the players, which isn’t surprising.
“I don’t know her personally, but I know they rave about her, and this is probably just the start of a trend like that.”
Tennis legend Billie Jean-King said: “Congratulations to Alyssa Nakken, the first woman to coach an #MLB game on the field at the #SFGiants exhibition game yesterday. More of this, please. #Progress.”
One fan wrote: “I dont think many understand just how HUGE this is. Never in my life did I think Id see it, although always wanting it. We need more of it.”
Another added: “Shout out 2 my girl making history as first base coach #alyssanakken. Can’t wait to announce her.”
