NWSL consider expanding league to add another club based in Los Angeles
The National Women’s Soccer League are considering expanding the tournament to include a team in Los Angeles.
Though the deal has not yet been finalised, WFC LA Inc. has been established as a limited liability company according to The Athletic.
A spokesperson for the NWSL said: “We’re committed to growing our league and expanding our reach into every region in the country.
“We continue to have meaningful discussions with a number of potential expansion markets and look forward to sharing more when it’s the appropriate time.”
There are currently nine teams in the league and there has been talk of adding a tenth for some years.
Austin, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Sacramento have all previously been mentioned as cities to base the new team in.
Los Angeles has not had a professional women’s soccer team since 2010 when LA Sol was disbanded as the sale of the team fell through.
The city currently has two Major League Soccer club’s with LA Galaxy and LAFC.
The men’s clubs are not thought to be involved in the new women’s side.
The NWSL will be the first league to return in North America as they kick off their Challenge Cup on June 27.
