New Zealand rugby legend Dan Carter has played a match for his childhood club Southbridge, scoring 12 points for his boyhood side.

He played the full 80 minutes and scored six of his seven kicks at goal as his side beat West Melton 54-14.

Carter recently signed for New Zealand club The Blues from Japan side Kobelco Steelers as an injury cover but has not yet been match fit. 

He said post-match: "If anyone saw that game today, I'd say myself that I'm a bit rusty.

"It's good to make the first step to potentially playing again. I'm not sure if I could play at Super Rugby level just yet. You leave those kinds of decisions up to the coaches."

Carter played 112 times for New Zealand and won two World Cups with the team before retiring from international rugby following the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.

He is the country’s leading point scorer as he scored 1,598 in his career for the All Blacks.
