New York City 2020 Marathon cancelled due to Covid-19
The 2020 New York City Marathon has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One of the most prestigious and largest annual events on the running calendar was due to take place on November 1, and would have marked the 50th anniversary.
But the New York Road Runners announced the cancellation due to health and safety concerns.
President and CEO Michael Capiraso said: "Cancelling this year's TCS New York City Marathon is incredibly disappointing for everyone involved, but it was clearly the course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective.
“Marathon day and the many related events and activities during race week are part of the heart and soul of New York City and the global running community, and we look forward to coming together next year.”
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio added: “While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first."
Registered runners for the event will have the option to claim a refund or defer their entry to either the 2021, 2022 or 2023 marathon.
The 2021 New York City Marathon will take place on November 7.
