'Most Dangerous Woman in the World' Lucia Rijker leads the way as first women boxers are inducted into Hall of Fame
Legendary fighter Lucia Rijker has become one of the first three women to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
The Dutch former world champion was bestowed the honour alongside American Christy Martin and Brit Barbara Buttrick.
Rijker, who was dubbed 'The Most Dangerous Woman in the World', never lost a bout and retired having won all 17 of her professional fights, 14 of which came by knockout.
Meanwhile, Martin and Buttrick were taken aback by the recognition they have received for being the first women to go into the Hall of Fame.
Martin is largely credited with bringing women's US boxing into the mainstream, and won a world title back in 2009.
“I just wanted to be a fighter and fit into the world of boxing and this is a dream come true,” she said.
Buttrick is also considered a pioneer for women in the sport, but from a much earlier time.
The Yorkshire-born southpaw made her name in the 1940s and 1950s and finished her career with a record of 30 wins, one defeat and one draw.
“This is wonderful news. It means a lot to me,“ said Buttrick. “After I started out with everybody against me back in the 1940's, it is nice to be recognised.”
