Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson named WNBA’s Most Valuable Player
Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson has been named the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player of the 2020 season for the first time.
The 24 year-old was the 2018 WNBA Rookie of the Year and a WNBA All-Star selection in 2018 and 2019.
The star received 43 of 47 first-place votes and a total of 458 points from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, and on the other four ballots she was in second.
She received the news at the IMG Sports Academy in Bradenton, Florida by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
Wilson, who was the No 1 pick in 2018, said: "I was overwhelmed with emotion.
"I was probably crying before Cathy finished her speech. In the offseason, in quarantine, I really focused on my game without a lot of distractions because the world was stopped because of COVID. I got a chance to hone in on little things to help me be more consistent all the time.
“I needed my teammates to know I'm going to produce X amount of things every game, because that's how you win, when you can count on people. That's probably the biggest thing for me being MVP.”
In her third season in the WNBA she averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocked shots.
Seattle Storm forward Breanna Stewart got three first-place votes and 34 for second place, while Chicago Sky's Courtney Vandersloot got the other first-place vote.
