Twitter users have blasted US rapper Kanye West after he paid tribute to his wife and reality TV star Kim Kardashian for reaching billionaire status.

Kardashian sold 20 per cent of her make-up brand KKW Beauty, worth $200 million, to take her brand wealth to a billion dollars, according to a BBC report.

And her husband seemed to confirm the news on social media.

He wrote: "I am so proud of my beautiful wife Kim Kardashian West for officially becoming a billionaire.

“You’ve weathered the craziest storms and now God is shining on you and our family, So blessed this is still life. So I made you this still life. We love you so much”

People have criticised West for being ‘insensitive’ by bragging about wealth during a global pandemic where millions of people have lost their jobs.

One user wrote: “Not asking him to donate money. But bragging about having a billion dollars while others are starving and suffering during a pandemic is pretty insensitive.”

While another tweeted: “Really?!?! With millions out of work, thousands dying from COVID, police brutality, racial injustices...you feel the need to brag about it. I’m a teacher who can’t even afford to fix my 2006 Honda Accord. This post angers me!!!”

And a third wrote: "Read the room, idiot."
