Harry Potter author JK Rowling has deleted a tweet praising Stephen King after he said he supports transgender women.

Rowling had tweeted a quote by writer Andrea Dworkin about how men can use women’s opinions as an ‘act of violence’, a tweet King shared.

It was in response to comments by Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle who said Rowling was using her experience of domestic abuse to discriminate against the trans community, something he has since apologised for.

After King shared her tweet, Rowling wrote: “It’s so much easier for men to ignore women’s concerns, or to belittle them, but I won’t ever forget the men who stood up when they didn’t need to. Thank you, Stephen.”

However, that wasn’t the end of the story, as followers then asked King what his views were about transgender women, to which he replied: “Trans women are women.”

Rowling has now deleted her appreciative tweet to King.

The author has taken a lot of criticism for her comments about transgender women recently. She sparked outrage earlier this month after commenting on an article about menstruation.

She wrote “’People who menstruate’. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

This led to accusations of her being transphobic - a charge she has denied.

But the backlash has continued and only last week three authors left the literary agency they shared with Rowling, citing her comments about transgender people.

And stars of Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have spoken out in support of the transgender community.
