Dick Van Dyke show creator and comedian Carl Reiner has died at the age of 98. 

He is best known for his double act with Mel Books in the 1960s and has directed comedies including The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains.

His assistant told Variety that he died on Monday night of natural causes at his California home.

During his career he won nine Emmy Awards, five of those for sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show.

He also directed hit films including Oh God! in 1977 and All of Me in 1984 and later starred in the Ocean’s film series. 

The Hollywood actor also appeared in several TV shows such as Frasier, King of the Hill, The Larry Sanders Show and Ally McBeal.

He was married to cabaret singer Estelle Lebost, who died in 2008, and has three children, Rob, Sylvia and Lucas.

Tributes have poured in, including from actor Alan Alder who wrote on Twitter: “My friend Carl Reiner died last night. His talent will live on for a long time, but the loss of his kindness and decency leaves a hole in our hearts. We love you, Carl.”

Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo said: “Carl Reiner, Bronx born and bred, made TV comedy that endures to this day. He made America laugh — a true gift. New York extends our condolences to his family and many friends.”

Actress Mia Fallow added: "We lost a person who gave us great times-countless laughs. He was brilliant. And kind. 

“I met him only once but will never forget his gentle thoughtfulness. He was with us through good times and hard times.  Thank you Carl Reiner.  His memory will be a blessing.”
