Elton John has joined a host of global superstars performing in their living rooms for a virtual concert in aid of coronavirus relief.

He was joined by other self-isolating stars Dave Grohl, Billie Eilish and Mariah Carey.

Initially it looked as if the 73-year-old host wasn't going to be able to perform as he was quarantined 'in the only house I've ever been in without a piano', but he managed to find a keyboard and later gave a rendition of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.'

Inbetween performances, there were messages from medical staff on the front line stressing the importance of following the guidelines on social-distancing and hygiene.

Billie Eilish tuned in with a video of herself and her brother, Finneas, who accompanied her on an acoustic version of 'Bad Guy'. 

Foo Fighters' lead singer Dave Grohl introduced his performance of 'My Hero' from his living room in Hawaii saying: "I hope you’re staying healthy. 

"If you love someone let them know, if you’re thankful for someone, tell them. 

"I’d like to dedicate this song to all the people out there on the frontlines that are doing their best to get us through all of this.”

He rounds off the video with some health advice, adding: "If you sing that chorus every time you wash your hands; you'll be in good shape!"

Mariah Carey was on the bill too with a performance of 'Always Be My Baby' and revealed that she was even wearing gloves inside her house.

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong streamed a solo acoustic version of the band's iconic single 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams.'

A highlight for fans of boybands came with the 'reunion' of The Backstreet Boys as they all tuned in from various locations to give a performance of 'I Want It That Way.'

Britain's Sam Smith performed his hit 'How Do You Sleep' telling fans that 'music is making me feel better', while American star Demi Lovato sang her single 'Skyscraper'.

The concert was concluded by Sir Elton himself, who said: "Stay safe, cherish your loved ones and when this is all over and done with, I'll be out there playing for you again."
