Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek Draper may never recover from effects of coronavirus and could be ‘locked in a coma forever’
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper could be in a coma for the rest of his life due to the ’extraordinary damage’ coronavirus has done to his body.
Draper, 52, has been in a coma for more than two months after being admitted to hospital with breathing problems caused by Covid-19 in March.
During his ten weeks in intensive care, he has recovered from the virus but has had to have his heart restarted once and still remains critically ill.
Following her emotional live TV interview on Friday, 53-year-old Garraway was speaking to The Sun and revealed that doctors have warned her to prepare herself for the ’second-worst scenario’.
“There was a terrible phone call two weeks ago from a senior doctor in the intensive care unit,” she said.
Her memory of the evening was so vivid that she could even recall what she was wearing and where she was sitting.
She immediately asked the question she always poses first - “Is Derek alive?”
The doctor informed her that he was and asked what she feared most from the situation.
“Derek dying,” she responded.
He then delivered the bombshell news: "Well, now I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this. That he is locked in this [coma] forever.
“I’m not telling you this to scare you. It’s because we don’t know if he can recover. We’ll only know over the coming weeks and months.”
Garraway, who with Draper has two children Billy and Darcey, admitted this was ’particularly awful’ news because it meant that even though he is no longer fighting covid-19, ’the battle has changed’.
Draper has been able to have an MRI scan in order to have the physical damage assessed.
“The virus has just attacked everything,” revealed Kate, “he’s got a tracheotomy now, so he’s breathing through that, and his lungs, which have clots, are showing some sign of recovery.”
She added that the prolonged period in a coma was particularly detrimental to his recovery and that he has developed diabetes following the illness.
“They’ve been trying for the past three weeks to bring him out and he’s not regaining consciousness,” she said.
“If you don’t regain it in the first two or three days then that’s when they start talking about weeks, months, even a year.”
She continued by adding how difficult the situation had been for her and the family, especially as they have to remain in lockdown and cannot rely on an extensive network of friends and family.
“The doctors are really adamant that I have to look after myself because this is a long haul and I can’t be folding, especially for the kids," she said.
“There have been moments when I have felt so consumed by fear and sadness and worry about our future, and Derek’s future, and the little family that we are."
In spite of all the adversities, the TV presenter still showed her strength spirit by saying: "I do wonder about the future, but you just have to stay positive and never give up don’t you? That’s all you can do.”
